As a specialist endodontic centre, we know root canals have a bad reputation for being a painful and traumatic experience. But this couldn’t be further from the truth. And sometimes, all you need is to hear from the person actually doing the procedure to put your mind at ease.
That’s why, in this latest blog edition, we caught up with Dr Orsteen, our resident specialist endodontist and founder of the Root Canal Centre here in Richmond.
Dr Orsteen, can you tell us about your dental background and what inspired you to specialise in root canal treatments?
During my dental studies, I initially found root canal treatments challenging. This changed when one of my professors invited me to assist him one evening a week. Over the course of nearly two years, I learned his advanced techniques and gradually developed a real passion for performing root canals.
After graduating as a dentist in 2002, I spent four years working as a general dentist before starting a three-year, full-time special course at university. Since 2006, I’ve focused exclusively on endodontic treatments, making it the sole area of my practice.
What are the common misconceptions about root canals, and how do you address them?
Many people believe that root canal treatment is a painful procedure; however, this is far from the truth if it is done by an experienced endodontist who also listens to their patients’ concerns.
What are the most common reasons patients need root canal treatment, and how can these issues be prevented?
Tooth decay, old large fillings and traumas are the most common reasons. Good oral hygiene, a healthy diet and regular dental check-ups are important to prevent tooth decay and possible subsequent fillings or crowns that might lead to the need for root canal treatment.
What are the latest advancements in endodontic treatments/technology that you implement in your practice?
As a specialist, it is important to have up-to-date scientific knowledge in your field of expertise. Instruments, materials and techniques are constantly evolving. I use all the latest scientifically proven instruments, materials, and techniques regardless of the costs whilst keeping treatment fees as reasonable as possible for our patients.
Can you walk us through a typical root canal treatment, from consultation to aftercare? How do you ensure the patient’s comfort during the process?
At the consultation, we will first chat about your problems and concerns. I will then thoroughly examine your teeth and gums, often taking an X-ray for a more detailed view. You will then be informed about the cause of the problem, diagnosis, relevant treatment options, costs, and estimated prognosis.
If you wish to proceed with the treatment, you can do so during the same appointment if there is enough time left. Most root canal treatments take between 60 and 90 minutes.
The procedure starts with numbing of the affected tooth. A dental dam protects you during the treatment, while a small hole is drilled into your tooth, and the canals are gently cleaned.
Most root canal treatments are done in a single visit, but sometimes, medication must be placed inside the tooth for a couple of weeks before you return to complete the procedure. Once finished, you will leave the practice with a strong temporary filling, after which your dentist will provide you with a definite coronal restoration.
A full treatment report will be given to either your dentist or, if you are self-referred, to you. Numbness usually persists for a couple of hours after the treatment, and the tooth can typically be used after this numbness has worn off. Most root canal treatments cause little to no post-operative pain, but sometimes, a few days with over-the-counter painkillers will be needed to treat discomfort. If you have any concerns after the treatment, you can contact our team at any time.
